Back in the Saddle Again

So is he sick of hanging around the Olson twin (whichever one it is) and going to Jonas Brothers concerts? Is it post Sheryl Crow traumatic disorder? Or just that he misses the competition and the joy of winning?

No matter what the reason, 7 time Tour de France winner, Lance Armstrong, is reportedly coming out of retirement.

Lance will be 37 next month. In cycling years that's like being a 45 year-old boxer or quarterback. Sure there was a 38 year-old that competed in this years Tour de France, but you didn't see him on the podium in Paris did you? And Lance isn't going to come out of retirement just to finish the TDF or even place second. He's coming out to try and win the thing.

No matter how you feel about Lance or how you think he will do, this is a good thing for cycling in this country. Americans, other than hardcore cyclists, haven't paid much attention to cycling since LA retired.

Of course he first has to get a team to let him ride for them - or start his own team from scratch. If he joins the existing team it will be as the leader so that could create some bad blood with the current leader/leaders of that team. If you starts his own team he needs to get enough good young riders to support him and convince the Tour officials (who have never seemed to care much for him) to let his team in. The rumor is he will ride for Astana. But Astana wasn't allowed to ride in this year's tour because of past problems with doping. I would guess the tour would have public relations nightmare if they didn't let Lance ride.

So we will get to see if a 37 year-old can win the tour next July. Stay tuned.

Keep on Trying

Yesterday Joey (10) and Robert (8) did their first kids triathlon.

The race distances were:

50 meter swim

2 mile bike

.5 mile run

They both did a great job. Other than Josh who is in NH for the summer, the whole family was there plus The Donk and his family.

Joey came in 2nd in his age group and Robert came in 4th in his age group.

Joey on the ride home "Dad, now I know why you do these races".

Here are some shots from the day.

Robert out of the pool and heading to his trusty steed

How Many Bikes are too Many?

Ok so I admit it, I may have a bike problem. Is there such a thing as BA - Bikes Anonymous?

To spare y'all from counting (cause I know it's hard for The Donk - what with having hooves and all), there are 28 bikes in the picture. This picture doesn't include my 4 good bikes that no one but me is allowed to touch. Actually my bikes wouldn't be in the shed anyways. They usually stay in the classroom or our bedroom...hey it's a king-size bed so lay off.

We are kinda the default bike drop of house whenever anyone we know is getting rid of bikes (or pretty much anything else - well except for money). They figure we must have someone who will fit the bike. This actually works out fairly well. It saves me from having to do bike maintenance on a lot of bikes. Flat tire? Chain fell off? Tired of riding your sister's pink Princess Barbie bike? Go grab another bike out of the shed.

We had each of the kid select up to two bikes a piece that they wanted to keep and we gave away the rest. 13 were given away and 15 were kept. The shed is now nicely organized and clean...it should last about 15 minutes.

No making fun of my lousy grass...you try growing grass with 11 kids playing soccer, football, lacrosse, baseball, man hunt etc...all over it...

And yes I know that there are trees growing in my gutters. I'm starting a tree-farm to help pay for that new AC unit you see in the picture.

Much thanks to Sam and the kids for cleaning out the shed.

Today's Workouts

Josh is home from his New Hampshire school for the weekend. He came home for Father's Day and we also went to an ordination to the priesthood this morning (pictures of that to be posted later).

32 miles cycling this morning before the ordination.

Josh and I went for a 3.2 mile run this afternoon. It was very hot out. Here we are pre-run. He's getting too tall. Or maybe I'm shrinking.
