Today's Workouts

25 mile run this morning. First 7 miles I was stiff and a little sore. Miles 8-23 I felt real good, kinda effortless. Last 2 miles were a bit of a struggle but not horrible. I wish all runs were like this one.

Oh and guess what the UPS guy brought me yesterday? Here's a hint.

I go through running shoes like some people go through toilet paper.

You seem to be the man to ask, so what running shoes would you reccomend for moi: a female runner and aerobics class enthusiast?

I would get seperate shoes for running and aerobics. Running shoes aren't going to give you the lateral support you need for aerobics. And running in aerobic shoes would be miserable.

as for running shoes:
If you are going to run a lot I would go to a specailty running shoe store (if you have one near enough) and let them decide. I good store will watch you run and then figure out what shoe is best for your running style. You will pay more for the first pair but you can always buy them online later on if you liked that model.

If you are going to do more recreational running then I would go somewhere like Kohl's and buy any name brand Running Shoe that feels good to you. Asics, Nike, Adidas, New Balance all have good shoes.

Rob,

I went to a running shoe store once, dropped nearly $100, and was told I need special narrow (B) shoes because that part of my foot where my toes come out measured narrow.

Well, it turns out that only that part (that they measured) is narrow, and the rest is a more average width, so when I did my first 18-mile training run in them, with my arch resting on the shoe walls, and not the shoe insole, I messed up my ITB something fierce.

And the best part? No refunds if you took 'em out for a run...

My conclusion is that buying shoes is a deeply personal and sensitive decision.

Peace,

Hey Tom! How's it going.

Good points. Colleen if you have a running store ask around and find out what others think of them and don't take their word as gospel.

A good running store will let you return for credit even if you have run in them. Or order from somewhere like Road Runner Sports or Running Warehouse (my fav) that not only has a guide online to help you get the right shoe, they also allow returns.

Is your ITB better now, those can take awhile to heal.

I've been lucky with shoes. I've used the same model of Asics for around 7 years now.

Rob,

Thanks for the great dinner, I should have said!

The ITB is better, but that's because I sat on my hind-end for many months and let it heal. Now the size of my hind-end is a bigger impediment to running.

Thanks for the tip on Running Warehouse. My mistake was *not* sticking with the NB's I knew worked for me.

Next step, learn how to change a bike tire, so I'm not afraid to try a tri-.

Peace,
Tom

I get about a dozen flats a year on my bikes. Come for dinner again and we can have a bike changing workshop.

I've branched out to other brands of shoes a few times over the years and never had any luck. I didn't get injured from them but I never felt comfortable in the shoes. So I stopped be dumb and just stick with the ones that work for me.

Running Warehouse is out in CA. But they have good prices, no sales tax and free 2nd day air. plus free return shipping (i think).

Wait, free dinner and free bike workshop? I must be missing the catch!

I would enjoy that. And Ian sure was fond of dancing with Mary Patricia (do I have that right?).

Peace,
Tom
